Since the inception of the world wide web, internet usage statistics indicate that worldwide use of the internet continues to rise. This trend is not just confined to the United Stated of America. As access levels improve on a worldwide basis, new users from less developed countries will contribute to this rising trend.

One of the main uses of statistics on internet usage in the United States is to estimate growth related to the use of the internet by students, both at home as well as at school. NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) is a federal entity which collects and analyzes the information related to education. Initially, the students were asked to maintain a log of their computer and internet usage for a specific time period. In this log, the amount of time spent on the internet was recorded along with details including whether they used the internet for school or personal work.

A questionnaire was answered by the students. It covered aspects like demographic information, priorities and time spent on personal activities. The student's grade was recorded from their schools. Lastly, before correlating the data, parents were asked to complete a questionnaire to determine the wards activities and assess any restrictions at home.

The data obtained on internet usage statistics assisted the authorities to understand key points to assist with better policy formulation to assist the educational requirements of students.
