Computer Usage Statistics

The use of computers has brought a revolutionary change in the way people research and do business. In recent times, computer usage has risen substantially and so has the need for computer statistics. Computer usage statistics includes information related to the use of computers.

Purpose of computer usage statistics

One of the popular uses for computer usage statistics is in schools and universities. Most schools and universities provide computer access to their students. Monitoring usage behavior allows the educational body to determine surfing habits and to ascertain whether adequate resources are being provided to meet demand. By referencing statistics of computer usage, officials can increase or decrease the access time of a particular student to the computer system. This can also be used in controlled access environments such as libraries where individual use is restricted to a certain amount of time.

Internet cafes or public internet access providers also monitor statistics on computer usage. Usually paid access limits surfers to a certain amount of time. Additional units must be purchased if the end users exceeds the paid time allowance.

Computer Usage Facts:

In 1993, The National Center for Education undertook a study of computer use. The study found that 39% of high school students used computers during school in the year 1989. Only 20% of the same students used computers at their home. 12% of high school students were reported to use computers at home for their schoolwork.

Later in 1995, the National Center for Educational Statistics gave another report which indicated a change in the amount of computer usage over time. These statistics cited an increase in the amount of computer usage at school, for all students in the United States. Some of the statistical information of this report is as follows:

By 1993, the number of students using computers at home increased to 58 % in comparison to only 39 % in 1989. Additionally, the number of high school students who used computers at home for school work increased to 20.9 % in 1993 as comparison to 12 % in 1989.

The general procedures followed to ascertain the computer usage statistics included: assessing the student's log, designing, completing and measuring student questionnaires, referencing student grades and conducting extensive data analysis. Different school districts carry out computer usage statistic studies independently, along with the National Center for Education Statistics which collects and analyzes the data on a nation-wide level.

The computer usage statistics provided by National Center for Education have really helped the authorities to understand the role of computer use and the internet in the school system. This has helped with policy and decision making.
