There was a time when cell phones were in limited use. Now, cell phones are one of the most used daily devices. Cell phone usage statistics indicate that the use of cell phones is continually on the rise. This trend is not just confined to the United States. Other countries that are less well developed are experiencing steady increases in cell phone usage.

Cell phone use statistics, up until 2005, indicate that cell phone use has reached close to 2.4 billion users. With this rate still increasing, the number is expected to be much larger in the coming years.

One of the primary reasons behind the increased usage of cell phones is the establishment of extra towers which provide a wider coverage for cell phone networks. Another reason is the introduction of highly affordable cell phones and marketing strategies like pre-paid plans and low-minute plans. This has resulted in higher up take rates with many consumers now opting to use cell phones in preference over conventional land lines.

Cell phones are being used by people of all ages. They have become an important necessity in each and every country. According to recent cell phones use statistics, in the United States, more that 50 % of children have their own personal cell phone. In the United Kingdom, the number of mobile phones in use exceeds the number of citizens.

It has been concluded from statistics on cell phone usage, that driving whilst operating a mobile phone contributes to the increased likelihood of a road accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states that 3 % of drivers talk on a hand-held cell at any given time. NHTSA also states that 73 % of drivers, who have cell phones in their automobile, use their phone while driving.

Many parts of US and other countries have made strong rules for cell phone usage while driving. New York was the 1st state to ban hand-held cell usage while driving. Illinois & Florida have disallowed the use of headsets apart from single-sided headsets. Arizona & Massachusetts school bus drivers are banned from using cell phones while driving. Various other states have also proposed similar legislations.

Louisiana, New Mexico, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania are some states which have approved studies to be conducted on driving and cell phone use. The evidence from the cell phone use statistics will assist lawmakers to make more informed decisions and enact more appropriate and responsive laws. With the introduction of new technologies, and the integration of cell phones with the internet, cell phones usage statistics will continue to rise and reveal new trends.
